There are so many music festivals, dance festivals and theatre festivals in Germany it is difficult to recommend just one or the other. Some of the most popular festivals include the Shleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Mittelrhein Music Moments Festival, the Munich Theatron Music Festival, the Young Euro Classical Music Festival, the Alte Oper Festival, the Bruhl Palace Music Festival and the Nuess Shakespeare Festival. Music and theatre fans have a myriad of choices in August.

1. Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival-14 July - 2 Sep 2007

From the first week in July to the first week in September, Schleswig Holstein is alive with music for one of the biggest music festivals in the world . With concerts in over 150 venues, from castles and palaces to pastoral gardens, you can take your pick. While you are visiting, you can also take in the Sand Sculptures in Travemunde - well worth the visit.

2. Munich Theatron Music Summer - 1 Aug - 27 Aug

The Theatron Music Summer hosts the best of Munich's rock and jazz musicians at this month-long series of free outdoor concerts in Olympic Park. The ampitheatre provides a wonderful view of both the lake and the stage. The first week includes cabaret singers from around Germany. The second week focuses on music from around the world. The 3rd week is devoted to rock and the final week is dedicated to Jazz.

3. The Annual Mittelrhein Musik Momente Festival-30 June - 1 Sep

The Mittelrhein Valley hosts a series of open air concerts in the scenic surroundings of historic castles and vineyards along the stretch of the Rhine between Ruedesheim and Koblenz. Throughout July and August, open air concerts, fireworks and opera are on offer at various venues along this stretch of the Rhine. Other events include dinners, wine tastings and speciality acts.

4. Beethoven Festival in Bonn

the Beethovenfest in Bonn starts on August 24, 2007 and runs to September 23, featuring top international performers, orchestras, conductors, soloists and ensembles from around the world. People come from all over the world to celebrate Beethoven in his home town and visit concert halls where Beethoven actually performed as well as his home and Bonn's Museum Mile. With over 60 concerts and events, the festival is a must for Beethoven lovers the world over.

5. The Young Euro Classic Festival-Berlin - 2 Aug -20 Aug

The Berlin Young Euro Classic Festival brings brings together young musicians and youth orchestras from across the world at the impressive Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin. This year, it also has events in Hamburg at the at the Laeiszhalle – Musikhalle Hamburg for the first few days.
Take the opportunity to listen to some of the finest young performers in the world performing contemporary and classical music. Information

6. The Bruhl Palace Concert Festival -10 Aug- 17 Aug

The Palace Concerts in the Cologne suburb of Brühl offer chamber ensembles playing baroque programmes in the rococo splendour of the Schloss Augustusburg. The festival week is part of a summer-long concert series at Brühl palace, presenting an intense programme of high-profile concerts.

7. Mosel Festival Weeks - 1 May-1 Oct

In addition to the Wine Festivals, 35 towns along the Mosel River participate in Moselfestwochen (Mosel Festival Weeks), offering classical, medieval, organ and world music, boogie, blues and jazz.

8. The Annual Alte Oper Music Festival - Frankfurt - 28 Aug - 1 Oct 2007

The Alte Oper Music Festival in Frankfurt offers a series of classical and contemporary music concerts from the end of August to the middle of September. This year, Erkki-Sven Tüür is the featured composer, with nine concert performances of his orchestral and chamber works and the featured musician is cellist Steven Isserlis, playing works by classical composers including Mozart.

The Alte Oper is a monument to 19th century love of the arts and the Opernplatz in front of the building is surrounded by cafes where you can sit outside, enjoy a drink and people watch.
