Germany's Mosel region is one of Germany's special treasures. It is not as popular with tourists as the Rhine river which makes it a particularly relaxing place to vacation. The wines here are beautiful, particularly if you like Riesling and with over 5000 grape growers in a 150 mile stretch of river, you have plenty to choose from.

Practice your German language skills before you visit the Mosel region as many store proprietors, innkeepers and restaurant employees speak little or no English.

If you consider starting off your holiday in Koblenz or Mainz, you will definitely want to take in the Rhine in Flames if you are in the area at the right time of year - there is no Mosel in Flames but from May to October, villages and towns along the Mosel have wine and music festivals that are intimate and delightful.

The Mosel is easy to get to, you can fly into Frankfurt and a few hours later be relaxing with a Riesling under some of the steepest vineyards in the world. It is almost impossible for me to believe that people can even harvest grapes on the Mosel vineyards without mountain climbing gear.

It is possible to do the Mosel by train but if I were to visit the Mosel by train, I would also rent or bring a bike along so as not to miss some of the quaint villages and lovely vineyards that the train routes miss.
