The Mosel region is home to over 23,000 acres of vineyards, with 19 collective vineyard sites and over 500 individual sites. Most of the wine grown in the region is white with Riesling being the most popular varietal. Mueller-Thurgau, Elbling, Bacchus and Spaetburgunder are also grown in the region. Rieslings from the Mosel are considered to be among some of the best Rieslings in the world largely because of the unique terroir of the region which boasts some of the steepest vineyards in the world. Wine tasting along the Mosel is easy, simply look for the signs that say Weinprobe, or drop into one of the Besenwirtschafen (Broom Public Houses) in the towns and villages. When you see a broom hung outside a shop, it means it is the season for wine tasting and you can enjoy some of the wines of the local vintners as well as different foods. Generally, the Besenwirtschafen are only open from late summer to December, depending on the locale. There are countless choices which can be found on Deuscherwein.de.
