Guide to Finding and Using Wi-Fi and Hotspots in Germany

Don't want to leave the PC behind? Germany has wi-fi locations and hotspots around the country. Hotels increasingly offer wi-fi and hotspots and many coffee shops and restaurants offer free wi-fi as well. Major airports offer pay wi-fi services and several companies offer pay hotspots and wi-fi.

FREE HOTSPOT AND WI-FI SERVICES IN GERMANY

Many private companies, hotels, restaurants and locations offer free hotspot and wi-fi locations. You can find many of these by checking out the listings provided by Wi-Fi and Hotspot locator Web sites.

Hotspot Hamburg
Hotspot Hamburg offers free hotspots in some of the hottest spots to hang out in Hamburg - you can sit at the Alex Restaurant with a view to the Alster or sit on the Cap San Diego in the Harbor and enjoy the views while you get log on to the wi-fi connection and get a little work done.

Hotspot Munich (Hotspot Muenchen) provides a listing of free hotspots and wi-fi locations in the Munich area.

FON
FON is a worldwide organization which utilizes private wi-fi so if you are traveling a lot, you might want to become a member. The Web site offers maps so you can see where all the locations are for FON wi-fi connections. The concept is that members make their bandwidth available to other members so you have to be willing to share your own wi-fi connection at home with fellow travelers.

PAY HOTSPOT AND WI-FI SERVICES IN GERMANY

Hotspot Deutschland
Hotspot Deutschland offers wi-fi services in restaurants and public facilities around the country. Simply buy a prepaid card at the location that advertises Hotspot Deutschland and log on to access the Internet.

T-Mobile Hotspots
T-Mobile offers paid wi-fi and roaming services to T-Mobile Users from the US, UK and other countries that offer T-mobile services. You will want to check with your wireless provider if you are going to use roaming services to find out what your cost will be using the T-Mobile roaming network.

Price: Prepaid Card - 8 euros per hour or applicable roaming charges if you are a T-Mobile customer

The Cloud
The Cloud offers wi-fi and hotspot services and listings for locations around the world with services from a wide variety of providers. You can research costs and wi-fi locations before you travel to Germany. They are also in partnership with providers like Skype and Vonage so you can access those services as well via wi-fi and at selected hotspots.

JIWire.com offers a listing of over 128,000 hotspots and wi-fi locations around the world. The site is easy to navigate and also offers hotspot security software and other services. The site shows no free hotspots.

Lycos offers a hotspot and wi-fi locator with over 10,000 locations in Germany including a large number of free (Kostenlose) locations.
