Munich's Best Classic Cocktails Bars

By , About.com Guide

Munich might be famous for its traditional beer halls and beer gardens, but the city also offers lots of great cocktail bars for some fine drinking. Check out our selection of some of the best Munich bars, featuring award-winning mixologists, classic cocktails, and outstanding bar food – beyond beers and brats.

1. Schumann’s Bar

Schumann's Bar has been an institution for Munich’s social elite for over 20 years now; owned by renowned mixologist Charles Schumann (who also wrote a best-selling book on cocktail recipes), Schumann’s is a place to see and be seen. Free tables might be hard to find (especially on the weekends), and prices are above average, but fans of Schumann’s keep coming back for the exquisite cocktails and superb people watching.

2. Bar Tabacco

Set in a side street of Munich’s Old Town, Bar Tabacco offers an upscale drinking experience, reminiscent of an evening in a classic American cocktail bar: The atmosphere is elegant and intimate, the cocktail list long and with a focus on classic drinks and a great selection of whiskeys. Service is first class, and the menu features steak and oysters. No credit cards accepted, so make sure to bring enough cash.
Hartmannstr. 8, 80333 Munich

3. Negroni Bar

Many locals think that Negroni has the best cocktails in town. And indeed, the wall behind the bar is graced with many trophies (in the form of golden shakers), a testament to Michele Fiordoliva’s outstanding mixing skills. Michele pours everything from classic cocktails to imaginative house specials - or just tell him what flavors you like and he will suggest the perfect drink for you.

4. Trader Vic

If you want a little break from Munich’s traditional beer halls and classic cocktail bars, check out the Hawaiian-inspired bar Trader Vic’s, set in the posh 5-star hotel Bayerischer Hof; this fun cocktail bar has been around for over 40 years, and little has changed – locals and out-of-towners love the kitschy and exotic décor, delicious Polynesian cuisine, and, of course, the legendary Mai Tai cocktail.
Promenadeplatz 2, 80333 Munich

5. Anna Bar

Set inside the boutique Hotel Anna at Karlsplatz, this spot is a stylish yet cozy cocktail bar with soft changing lights; try a refreshing “Anna Spritz Fauster” with rum fruits, Prosecco Spumante, lime, lemon, and orange zest, and enjoy an Asian inspired menu including Sushi.
Schützenstrasse 1, 80335 Munich

6. Eat the Rich

Strong cocktails served in half liter glasses (called “Two in One”) and a good looking, fun loving clientele make this bar one of Munich’s most popular hangouts - no wonder it gets jam-packed on the weekends. If the drinks are too stiff for you, back them up with some food; you can order a hamburger or the “ XXL Wiener Schnitzel“ until 2.30 a.m.
Hess-Str. 90, 80797 Munich

7. Harpers and Queens

Located on one of Munich’s main shopping streets, Harpers and Queens is a chic bar with a sophisticated vibe, leather sofas, crystal chandeliers and golden mirrors; the focus is on classic drinks, which you can get for good prices during the daily happy hour from 7 to 9 pm (as well as pizza and pasta for 4 Euros).
