The Schiller 5 Hotel and Boardinghouse, set in in the heart of Munich, surprised me with some unique touches; if you stay here, you can look forward to extra-long beds, a free mini-bar, and an owner, who welcomes you personally.

The Rooms

The 4-star hotel Schiller 5, which opened up in 2005, offers 55 modern rooms (including superior rooms and suites); the room I stayed in faced a quiet backyard and featured a modern kitchenette complete with stovetops, coffee maker, and microwave, a 7-foot-long bed, a radio with mp3 hook-up, and a flat-screen TV. A vase with fresh colorful flowers stood on the table.

All rooms and the lobby at Hotel Schiller 5 are decorated with lots of attention to detail; the interior design is an interesting combination of trendy and classic elements; you’ll find chandeliers and deer antlers next to modern vases and black and white photography. Blue, white, and turquoise are the dominating colors throughout the hotel. The colors also lead you from lively Schillerstreet to the entrance of the hotel, which is hidden in a courtyard. Guests walk through an alleyway lined by glass panels, which light up in different shades and are adorned with quotes from German writer Friedrich Schiller.

The Location

Schiller 5 is in the center of Munich and in walking distance to the city’s main transportation hub as well as its sights and attractions. Munich’s central train station is just a 5-minute walk away, and it will take you around 10 minutes to reach the city center with Munich’s main attractions, such as the Frauenkirche, Marienplatz, and Hofbrauhaus. It’s also an ideal location if you are here for Oktoberfest: You won’t need longer than 15 minutes to walk to Theresienweise, the venue of the world’s most popular beer festival.

The streets around Schiller 5 are home to many Munich hotels for all budgets – but you’ll also find some rather seedy establishments here; be prepared to see sex shops, cheap eateries and supermarkets in Schillerstrasse and its surrounding streets. Nevertheless, I felt safe staying here and when I walked back to the hotel at night, the street was filled with people of all ages and families. The mix of guests at the hotel– families, business travelers, and single travelers – made me feel even more comfortable.

The Breakfast

The breakfast spread is generous and very good; you’ll find everything you expect at the buffet, including eggs, sausages, rolls, yoghurt, cold cuts, cheese, salmon, cereal and fruits; but there are also some nice surprises like paper-thin crepes with jam or the Bavarian specialty "Weisswurst", veal sausage with sweet mustard. Coffee drinks are made to order. But the highlight of every breakfast is the warm welcome of Leo Milchiker, the owner of Hotel Schiller 5. Herr Milchiker greets every guest at his hotel with "Guten Morgen", a very personal and warm touch that you rarely find at a 4-star hotel.
