Another few blocks and you are at the Rathaus Marketplace. You can see the clock tower of the Rathaus from most locations in the city center so it also makes a good point of reference should you lose your sense of direction.
Points of Interest
Visit the Rathaus, which was completed in 1897. Built of sandstone in new-Renaissance style, the building is visible from much of the city because of its 112 meter tower. The elaborately ornate facade includes 20 statues of the Kaisers and amazing sculptures and artwork.
The present Rathaus is the 6th one erected on this spot, the longest lasting one was erected in 1290 and finally destroyed during the Great Fire of 1842. It took the Hamburg government over 50 years to agree on the proposed designs fort the current Rathaus.
The Capital of the state of Hamburg, the Rathaus has several magnificent halls used for representative purposes and sittings of government and parliament. Tour the grand banquet hall which is 46 meters long (basically half a football field) with 3 chandeliers that each weigh close to a ton a piece and huge paintings depicting the history of Hamburg from the 9th to the 20th century.
