A visit to Dresden would not be complete without a visit to one of the Porcelain Manufacturers which also offer museums with spectacular antique pieces on display. Meissen is the oldest Porcelain Manufacturer in Europe and the Saxon Porcelain Manufactory in Dresden still manufactures porcelain in the style of its founder,Carl Thieme, with rich paintings enhancing the beauty of the pieces.

The Porcelain Collection at the Zwinger is one of the largest in the world, with 20,000 pieces of Chinese, Japanese and Meissen Porcelain.

Interesting Facts

  • The First Porcelain in Europe was developed in Dresden in 1709.
  • August the Strong brought Porcelain to Germany and declared his love for porcelain "maladie des porcellaines" – Porcelain Disorder.
  • Chinese vessels and figures of the Song, Ming and Kangxi periods as well as Japanese Imari and Kakiemon porcelain from Arita predominate.
  • The Saxon Porcelain Manufactory of Dresden owns moulds of more than 12,500 different models and shapes.
