The Cologne City Gates were built in medieval times and three of the original twelve still remain,the Severinstor, the Eigelsteintor and the Hahnentor. The Cologne City Gates give you an idea of what it must have been like to have lived in a walled city. City walls still remain from the Romans and a visit to the City Gates is a must for history enthusiasts.
Interesting Facts
- Severins-Gate- this south gate is one of the three preserved city gates from the 12th century. Through this gate, and over the Chlodwig Place in front of the gate, was the main road to Rome.
- Eigelsteintor - During the construction of the Eigelsteintorburg, the Eigelstein was integrated into the medieval city wall. The large gate with its two large half towers was restored, and serves as the entrance gate to the museum. The famous "Kölsche Boor" is located on the left tower.
- The Hahnentor Gateon Rudolfplatz,is a double turreted gate built in the 13th century, is one of the most interesting of Cologne's city gates. Today, the Hahnentor houses an exhibition centre for young Cologne artists.
- Bayen Tower-This is the south-point of the former city wall, dating from the 12th century.
- Ulrepforte/Kartäuserwall-One of the defense towers from the 12th century with the largest preserved section of the city wall.
