Doberman Pinscher sometimes get a bad rap as being frightening and aggressive. The Doberman was actually bred in Germany for the first time by by
Doberman Pinschers were first bred in Germany around 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a tax collector, dog catcher and night watchman who wanted to breed a dog that could protect him, would be strong and loyal. Possible dogs he used to breed the Doberman include the Pinscher, the Beauceron, the Rottweiler, the Thuringian Shepherd Dog, the black Greyhound, the Great Dane, the Weimaraner, the German Shorthaired Pointer, the Manchester Terrier and the German Shepherd Dog, with the single largest gene pool believed to have come from German Shepherds.
Think about it - the first Dobermans were true mutts, as were most popular dog breeds today. Dobermans are intelligent, loyal and naturally protective but meanness in the dogs is taught. They have been good working dogs since the WWI when they gained their popularity.
