German Shepherd on the Job

Mary Vogt
The German Shepherd was developed in the 1899 in Germany by Captain Max von Stephanitz, a young German cavalry officer who founded the first society for German Shepherds and started the German Shepherd breed. The Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde, (German Shepherd Dog breeders' organization) was founded and German Shepherds very quickly became popular in police and military work as well as being great family dogs.

German Shepherd dogs were the first dogs to be used as guide dogs for the blind. They are sociable, loyal, intelligent and good-sized - weighing anything from 60 to 95 pounds and standing about two feet high. To learn more about German Shepherds, you can check with any of the associations that recognize them as a breed including the NADSR, CKC, FCI, AKC, UKC, KCGB, ANKC, NKC, NZKC, GSDCA, SV and the United Schutzhund Clubs of America.

German Shepherds make great pets, great friends and great working dogs and are popular with people around the world for their intelligence and loyalty.

You might want to consider a German Shepherd if you have a family and a big yard or if you want a dog you can train easily. Learn about choosing a German Shepherd puppy.
