Germans love their dogs. German dogs are well behaved and, up until recently, could walk free in most cities. You can take your dog into restaurants in Germany and the list of dog breeds from Germany is extensive. We all know German Shepherds come from Germany, Dachsunds, Dobermans, Rottweilers, and Weimaraners too. Schnauzers are a German favorite and Great Danes hail from Germany, not Denmark. The Great Dane (or Deutsche Dogge) is the national dog of Germany, declared so in 1876. Many German dogs were bred for protection, many for keeping vermin away. Now we sit at home with our Pomeranians or Poodles in our laps or our Great Danes drooling at our feet. Rin Tin Tin immortalized the German Shepherd as a hero and Scooby Doo appears anything but German. Poodles don't look too German either, but they are.
Whether you have a Fifi or a Max - you can probably thank the Germans for your best friend. Personally I have a mutt, but based on how stubborn he is, I am sure there is some German in him somewhere. Another interesting fact is that the purebreds of today were the mutts of years gone by. If you are a dog lover, you are sure to enjoy a few great pictures and a little history of German dog breeds.
