Where to Dine in Frankfurt

By , About.com Guide

Looking for a good restaurant in Frankfurt? Here is a list of recommended restaurants in Frankfurt, offering both international as well as regional cuisine. If you want to get a real taste of Frankfurt’s hearty fare, look out for the famous Frankfurter Grüne Sosse, a rich green sauce made with herbs; Handkäs mit Musik (“handcheese with music”), a sour cheese marinated with oil and onions; and, of course, apple wine, called Ebbelwoi in the local dialect.

1. Restaurant Sèvres

First class gourmet restaurant in the hotel Hessischer Hof; the restaurant got its name from fine French Sèvres porcelain, a gift from Napoleon, which is displayed in floor-to-ceiling glass cases throughout the restaurant. The food is excellent; try the medallion of Vogelsberg venison saddle with elder jus, truffled cream cabbage and herb dumplings. The wines come from the restaurant’s vineyard “Prinz von Hessen".

2. Silk Restaurant

Set in Frankfurt’s famous nightclub cocoon, this “bed restaurant” draws in guests with an avant-garde interior design and an imaginative fusion cuisine. All guests arrive at the same time, get comfortable on white leather sofas and enjoy a set 11-course menu lounging or even lying down. The award-winning cuisine is influenced by French, Asian and, Austrian fare. Reservations mandatory.

3. Adolf Wagner Tavern

This rustic tavern, which has been in the family since 1931, serves up traditional German dishes such as meat-filled cabbage rolls, sauerkraut, and liver dumpling soup, ready to be washed down with “Ebbelwoi”. Guests sit on wooden benches in the old-fashioned wine press hall or in the cozy courtyard outside.

4. Gerbermühle

Great place in the summer: The Gerbermühle, a renovated flour mill from the 16th century, lies directly on the banks of the river Main, and the terrace offers panoramic views of Frankfurt’s skyscrapers. The menu features Mediterranean as well as local dishes; the prime boiled veal with original Grüner Sosse and potatoes is especially good; for dessert, try the strawberry rhubarb compote with buttermilk ice cream.

5. Opera Restaurant

This restaurant is beautifully set in Frankfurt’s grand Opera house; under elegant chandeliers and gold-ornamented ceilings guests dine on German and Italian cuisine. Every weekend, there is a champagne brunch with live piano music. In summer, choose a table on the terrace.
