What is a German Stollen:
German Stollen is a loaf-shaped fruitcake made of yeast, water and flour; it is traditionally eaten around Christmas time in Germany and is a wonderful treat you should definetely try.
German Stollen is usually filled with nuts, raisins, candied citrus peel, spices, and dusted with icing sugar. The form of the Stollen is said to represent Baby Jesus in swaddling clothes.
Dresden's Christmas Stollen:
German Christmas Stollen goes back to the 14th century, where it was first baked in the city of Dresden. There are many different Stollen bakers all over Germany today, but the best one is still the original Dresden Stollen. Starting in November, you can buy this culinary treat in many German supermarkets - or get the real deal at the Dresden Christmas market.
The Stollen-Festival :
Every Christmas, Dresden celebrates its famous Christmas bread with a "Stollen Festival"; at the Dresden Christmas market, the oldest Christmas fair in Germany, the world's biggest Stollen is presented: It weighs 4 tons and measures 13 feet in length.
Before sampling a piece of the super-cake, watch the traditional procession of hundreds of pastry chefs, who carry the giant treat through Dresden's Old Town.
