Sport fans from around the world turn their eyes to Berlin this summer: The German capital hosts the 12th World Championships in Athletics, the most important international sports event in 2009.
Between August 15-23, 2009, over 1800 of the world's best track and field athletes compete in 24 different disciplines, from marathon and hurdles, to pole vault, and hammer throw.
Berlin hosts the World Championships in Athletics at its Olympic Stadium, which was the site of the 1936 Olympic games. The renovated stadium is the second largest in Germany, seating over 70,000 spectators and featuring a distinct blue racetrack, which reflects the color of the local Berlin soccer club Hertha BSC.
The marathon of the World Championships in Athletics will not be held in the stadium, but takes place in the heart of Berlin; it starts and ends at the national symbol of Germany, the Brandenburg Gate.
