October 3rd 2009: Celebrate Germany's National Holiday

Follow me on:

October 3rd is "Tag der deutschen Einheit" - Germany's Unity Day. This national holiday commemorates the anniversary of Germany's reunification since 1990. Almost every German city celebrates October 3rd with a street festival, but the best open-air festivities will be held in Germany's capital, Berlin.

2009 is a special year for Berlin: The German capital celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which came down on the eve of November 9th, 1989. Berlin kicks off its festivities this weekend, organizing a party for the "Unity Day", which lasts from October 2-4, 2009. The boulevard Unter den Linden will be transformed into a colorful street fair, leading all the way up to the Brandenburg Gate, where you can enjoy open-air concerts all weekend long.

Make sure to look out for two giant, 14 meters tall marionettes that will be roaming the German capital for the next three days. These fantastic puppets, supplied by the French theater group "Royal de Luxe", represent East and West Berlin - and at the end of this weekend, the will meet each other in the streets of Berlin and unite.

Have a look at this Berlin map to find out where to encounter the giant marionettes.
