Photo of the Week: War Memorial in Berlin

Wednesday December 3, 2008

The war memorial "New Guard" in Berlin houses this beautiful and moving sculpture "Mother and her dead son" by the Berlin artist Käthe Kollwitz.

The sculpture is directly set under an oculus and is exposed to the weathers, symbolizing the suffering of civilians during the war.
These days, the sculpture is covered with snow.

The war memorial is part of my Berlin Walking Tour.

This moving statue is a perfect tribute to the millions of civilians who suffered during World War II. It’s a beautiful photo, too.

There seems to be nothing more tragic than having to bury your child. It goes against nature and I don’t think anyone can get over that kind of sadness. This is certainly a moving image.
